Laguna Elementary School's (LES) curricular focus is literacy, which is supported by a daily time block devoted to literacy instruction and school-wide incentive programs that are designed to encourage reading enthusiam across all grade levels. Our program also includes specialized instruction for all students in computers, language and culture, art, library skills and physical education. A computer lab is established for student use, and individual classrooms are wired for internal networking and Internet access.
A "School Effectiveness Council" (SEC) was established to focus on improving the effectiveness of the school. The team collects and analyzes data to determine priorities and timelines for addressing the needs and goals of the school. They also work with the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) on various school activities.
The "Student Assistance Team" (SAT) serves as point of first contact for students who have been referred for testing. They offer strategies for classroom teachers working with challenging children and develop support structures for children who do not qualify for special educational services.
The Board of Education for the LDoE recognizes that a child's education is a responsibility shared by the school and family. To support the goals of the K'awaika schools to educate all students effectively, the schools and parents must work as knowledgeable partners.
Parents can volunteer to support their child and the school in many different ways such as:
- WATCH D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students)
- Classroom, Library, Playground, Cafeteria Volunteer
- Language and Culture Resource Person
- PTO Member
- Reading to/with their child and/or other children at home and school
